چکیده

Searches for permanent electric-dipole moments (EDM) of atoms provide important constraints on competing extensions to the standard model of elementary particles. Recently proposed experiment with liquid 129Xe [M.V. Romalis and M.P. Ledbetter, Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 067601 (2001)] may significantly improve present limits on the EDMs. To interpret experimental data in terms of CP-violating sources, one must relate measured atomic EDM to various model interactions via electronic-structure calculations. Here we study density dependence of atomic EDMs. The analysis is carried out in the framework of the cell model of the liquid coupled with relativistic atomic-structure calculations. We find that compared to an isolated atom, the EDM of an atom of liquid Xe is suppressed by about 40%.

The Search for a Permanent Electric Dipole M o m e n t using 129 Xe and 3 He Rohan

Time reversal and parity non-invariant interactions within an atom naturally give rise to an atomic permanent electric dipole moment (PEDM). For noble gas atoms, the size of such a PEDM scales as Z 2 and higher powers of Z depending on the actual manifestation of T non-invariance, most importantly a distribution of electric dipole moment within the nucleus (Schiff Moment) and a T-odd tensor int...

Atomic CP-violating polarizability

Searches for CP-violating effects in atoms and molecules provide important constrains on competing extensions to the standard model of elementary particles. In particular, CP violation in an atom leads to the CP-odd T,P-odd polarizability CP: a magnetic moment CP is induced by an electric field E0 applied to an atom, CP= E0. We estimate the CP-violating polarizability for rare-gas diamagnetic a...

Xenon NMR of liquid crystals confined to cylindrical nanocavities: a simulation study.

Applications of liquid crystals (LCs), such as smart windows and the ubiquitous display devices, are based on controlling the orientational and translational order in a small volume of LC medium. Hence, understanding the effects of confinement to the liquid crystal phase behaviour is essential. The NMR shielding of (129)Xe atoms dissolved in LCs constitutes a very sensitive probe to the details...

M ar 2 00 2 Electric dipole moments of Hg , Xe , Rn , Ra , Pu , and TlF induced by the nuclear Schiff moment and limits on time - reversal violating interactions

We have calculated the atomic electric dipole moments (EDMs) induced in Hg, Xe, Rn, Ra, and Pu by their respective nuclear Schiff moments S. The results are (in units 10S(e fm)−1e cm): d(Hg) = −2.8, d(Xe) = 0.38, d(Rn) = 3.3, d(Ra) = −8.5, d(Pu) = −11. We have also calculated corrections to the parityand time-invariance-violating (P, T odd) spin-axis interaction constant in TlF. These results a...
